Marijka Haverhals

Conservation Projects Manager

Marijka grew up in the hustle and bustle outside Washington, D.C., where her wonder of the natural world began standing in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History as a small child amid a melting pot of diversity.  She ventured into the mountains for college where she graduated from the University of Montana with honors in 2001 with a BS in Resource Conservation and a minor in Wilderness Studies.  She worked at the Missoula County Weed District & Extension Office for 7 years as the first Weed Education Coordinator in Montana where she helped build a robust educational program.

While in Montana, Marijka was on the board of directors for the Montana Weed Control Association and the Montana Native Plant Society.  Marijka moved to Moscow in 2008 to be closer to her partner and starting working at the University of Idaho alongside her now husband in his biocontrol research lab.  She has also worked for various faculty coordinating internship programs and working on sustainable agriculture grants. She formed a non-profit called the Northern Rockies Invasive Plant Council where she organized various regional land management conferences. Marijka is excited to join the Palouse Land Trust in January of 2023. Marijka is a nature lover and feels it is an honor to work in conservation and give back to the land that gives us so much in return.

She lives with her husband, Mark, their two daughters, Swaanie and Annika, two cats, and two dogs who keep her very busy and entertained. In her spare time, she loves to do pretty much anything outdoors. Whether it is hiking with the family, backpacking in the wilderness, rafting down rivers, boating on lakes, cross country skiing in the forest, or just relaxing on the earth, being in nature is where she feels the most connected and at peace. She also enjoys all kinds of yoga, hanging with her close friends, and traveling to faraway places while experiencing diverse cultures and delicious local cuisine.
