Learn about water quality, critters and, crawlies that inhabit our local waterways with us and our partners at Whitman Conservation District! This special Stream Science Day will introduce participants to aquatic insect sampling, the study of tiny crawlies that help us understand the health of our waterways. Perfect for learners of all ages from kiddo to adult.
PLT and Whitman Conservation District will provide all equipment for sampling, magnifying glasses and containers for observing these aquatic friends. Here’s the learning lineup:
10:00 AM – Gather at Klemgard County Park Pavilion for warm drinks, snacks, and introductions
10:15 AM – Learn the basics of aquatic insect sampling and how these tiny creatures help us understand water quality
10:45 AM – Explore sections of Union Flat Creek and participate in hands-on collection of macroinvertebrates. We’ll provide all necessary equipment, magnifying glasses, and containers so you can take a closer look at the fascinating life just beneath the water’s surface. Water refills will also be available.
12:15 PM – Return to the park to share discoveries, enjoy a few more snacks, and wrap up the morning together.
Restrooms will be available at the park. Please bring water, wear clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dirty, and bring boots if you want to get up close and personal. We will provide warm drinks to start, water refills, and snacks throughout the event.
All you need to bring beyond that is a love for nature, water, and bugs!
