Join us as we celebrate Idaho’s 1st Community Forest Idler’s Rest Nature Preserve with the Old Growth Forest Network (OGFN) The OGFN is the only national network in the U.S. of protected, old-growth, native forests.

Idler's Rest Nature Preserve, a 35-acre forest north of Moscow cared for by the Palouse Land Trust (PLT) since 2000, is home to a remarkable grove of old-growth western redcedar and Douglas-fir. In recognition of this unique natural area and its importance to the local community, the OGFN has designated Idler's Rest as one of its Community Forests.

This gathering celebrates that recognition and highlights how Idler's Rest is managed with old-growth forest characteristics in mind. With more than a century of history as a gathering place for the Nez Perce, homesteaders, scout troops, students, and neighbors, Idler's Rest continues to serve as both a community space and an example of thoughtful forest stewardship.

The morning will feature a short presentation and official proclamation of the Community Forest, followed by a casual stroll around the trails led by PLT staff. Everyone is welcome!

We’re also inviting the community to put their feelings for this special place into words through Love Letters to the Forest. Poems, memories, thank-yous, tiny stories, woodland declarations of devotion: we’ll take them all. Leave your love letters and thoughts at the designated “poet-tree” at Idler’s Rest or share them electronically via this form.
